Modern Morocco is a country that is unique in the Muslim world, shaped by its diverse ethnic groups and it’s location between Europe, Mediterranean countries to the east, the Atlantic Ocean and sub-Saharan Africa. This multifaceted country is an intoxicating mix of Arabic, Islamic and the African world. The exotic magic of medinas and minarets, desert and the Atlas mountains will leave you mesmerized.
Marrakech has been the heartbeat of Morocco since its importance as a trading and resting place at the crossroads of ancient caravan routes from Timbuktu. This rose pink city has remained virtually unchanged since the Middle Ages with it’s solid ramparts encircling and protecting its mysterious labyrinthine medina, concealing the palaces, mansions and bustling souks within. The focal point of Marrakech has to be the Jemaa el-Fna, the most exuberant marketplace in the world. It is an extraordinary gathering place which reaches it’s height of activity after sunset, as the drum beat from the musicians begins. The square fills with snake-charmers, fortune-tellers, musicians, storytellers and showmen, amidst the smoke from the food stalls and the scent of perfume and spices which has an all-pervading presence in this most mystical city.
